⚠️ E48-32 · E16-4 · No signal · Open 6am–8pm
E48-32 means your decoder has lost usable satellite signal. On the Vaal it is almost never a billing problem — it is wind on the dish, water in a connector or a tired Smart LNB, and all three are fixable in one visit.
E48-32 is the decoder telling you it can no longer lock onto the transponder it needs. The tuner is working, the smartcard is reading, but the signal arriving down the coax is too weak or too noisy to decode. That is why rebooting, re-inserting the card or resetting the decoder rarely helps for more than a few minutes.
Its close relatives behave the same way. E16-4 usually points at a subscription or smartcard mismatch on a channel the dish is otherwise receiving, while E48-32 and E30-4 point squarely at signal. We check which one you are actually seeing before touching anything, because the repair path is completely different.
Open water means uninterrupted wind. Over a season that wind works pole fixings and bracket bolts loose, and half a degree of drift on a 60cm dish is enough to drop quality below the lock threshold on a cloudy evening while still looking fine at midday.
Damp is the second culprit. Constant humidity off the river and dam corrodes F-connectors, wicks into unsealed LNB boots and greens the braid inside cheap coax. The signal degrades slowly, so the error starts as an occasional pixelation on the sports channels and ends as a permanent E48-32.
Vegetation is the third. Willows and poplars along the banks grow into the line of sight to the satellite over two or three summers, and the fault appears seasonally — fine in winter, broken by December.
We meter the installation in order — dish, LNB, cable, decoder — instead of swapping parts and hoping. Signal strength, signal quality and bit error rate are read at the decoder first, then again at the dish, so we can tell a pointing fault apart from a cable fault in a few minutes.
From there it is a re-point on the meter, an LNB replacement if a leg has failed, or re-terminating and resealing connectors. We then confirm every decoder on the property — main, Extra View, cottage, patio — is locked on and holding quality before we leave.
Check whether the error affects every channel or only some. All channels gone points at dish, LNB or cable. A handful of channels missing while the rest work usually points at a package or smartcard issue that MultiChoice handles on dstv.com.
Look at the dish itself if it is safely visible. A visibly tilted dish, a hanging cable, a cracked LNB cover or a bird's nest behind the arm tells us what to bring, and lets us quote you accurately over the phone.
We are an independent DStv installer on the Vaal. For packages, billing and MultiChoice's own error-code guides, use the official DStv pages:
Almost never. E48-32 means the decoder cannot see usable satellite signal at all. If your account were the issue you would normally see a subscription message such as E16-4 on specific channels rather than a total loss of signal.
In the large majority of cases, yes. We carry Smart LNBs, connectors, coax and mounting hardware on the vehicle, so a re-point, an LNB swap or a re-terminated cable is done on the same callout.
Yes, and it is the classic Vaal pattern. A dish sitting right on the edge of lock will hold in still, clear conditions and drop in wind or cloud. We set it back to full quality rather than just enough to work today.
We quote before we start. If diagnosis shows the decoder itself has failed, we tell you what a replacement or swap-out involves before any further work happens.
